Today was good times and it involved a long but scenic road trip from near Golden to Fernie, British Columbia. It’s not a tough drive but it’s pretty long and took me near 3.5 hours on a clear sunny day. On a snowy day, who knows!? I was meeting a lady named Karen at for 1PM and made great haste. Upon arrival, I was happily surprised that they had an afternoon lift-ticket and naturally, I got a few runs in. Let’s discuss this a bit, shall we?
First off, getting to Fernie from Golden is really easy and I’d love to do it again in the summer as you pass golf courses every few minutes. It’s got some stellar views and make sure you don’t go to Cranbrook, if so you’re adding on a good chunk of time that you don’t need to. When driving “out there” in the wilderness, always fill your tank of gas before you leave, who knows when the next station may be, yes?
I realized it was going to take longer than I thought so I skipped lunch and just powered through arriving at Fernie Alpine Resort about fifteen minutes before my meeting, made it! Not long after I was getting setup with some skis and a pass for the afternoon. Fernie is quite developed and it has a small village of sorts at the base, quite liked it and looking forward to discovering more of it.
consists of several huge bowls and I tried my luck in the Siberia and Timber ones this afternoon. It’s a big mountain and despite skiing most of the afternoon, only got in 2.5 runs and that was booking it, not some leisurely day on the slopes. The sky was perfect so I was snapping shots like a mad man who knew not when he’d see the sun again. I really liked the vibe of the place and met a few interesting people on the slopes and in the shops. I’ll be writing a full update about Fernie on Saturday when I ski it for a full day…
So now I’m in the doing work in my hotel room after demolishing a meal at Yamagoya which serves delicious sushi and Japanese cuisine. If you go there, get there early as it opens at 5 and no joke, it’s a waiting list by 5:45… I met some interesting local characters at dinner and I’ll be joining them for a beverage or two in an hour so I had better wrap this up now.
Big Thanks to , and and of course for making this happen!
