Great Golf Hole

Yesterday was good, met up with Gary from Everything Everywhere, had lunch and discussed world travel in good depth. The topic of BlogWorld Expo came up. I went last year as I own a blogging resource and think I may go this year. Back to the tour.

Played a round of golf then drove up to a friends cabin in Lake Cowichan via Malahat aka transcanada highway. The hole above is the 6th @ The Ridge Course in Cordova Bay. Walked away with a birdie and a few in the water; good hole. The next morning we took off bought some bait and went fishing in Beaver lake. Beaver lake was a good time, a friend assured me it was “just the island way” when borrowing a canoe at a recreation facility where no one was in the office. It was a good time until some guy in a gold chain confirmed that it wasn’t. On top of that the canoe was arguably the least “sea worthy” vessel I’d seen, let alone been in quite some time. Not so fun with pockets full of electronics. After what could old be described as an event we took an old logging road that’s now been paved towards the coast.

Along the old logging road we checked out Bear lake, Lizard Lake, Fairy Lake on our way to Port Renfrew. After port renfrew we checked out Sombrio which is an old hippy beach and renoun amongst Southern islanders as a great surfing spot. Didn’t surf, not really feeling 5degreee water so much. The road to the parking lot is ridiculous, I don’t know how people make it / wish to attempt it without a 4×4 jeep or truck. The path to the beach afterwards was no casual stroll either.

After that we drove through some other small towns, then Sooke and back into Victoria. The weather was horrible from noon on, first time it rained the entire time here. On top of that the tempature was around ~14 which didn’t make for much fishing or exploring.

It’s hard to believe this place is part of Canada compared to the rest of the country,  with dense old growth forests hosting trees the width of buses. Didn’t catch any fish either, just some bites. They don’t have the same amount of predators we do so you really have to work at it or something like that. I miss the ride or die predator mentality that is so prevalent in the lakes where I’m from.

Was a good trip and now I’m curious about the mid / north part of the island.
